Materials & Apparatus

  1. Drug and Vehicle (in 2 mL Eppendorf tubes)
  2. Infusion log
  3. 0.9% Saline
  4. Syringe and needle (~22G)
  5. Double infusion needles
  6. Infusion tubing
  7. Dual injector pump
  8. Hamilton gastight syringe (four 50uL)
  9. Hamilton needles (blunt tip)

Steps

  1. Insert the double infusion needles into the infusion tubing.
    1. Don’t push them all the way in, this can make it difficult to remove. Insert until only 1mm of the needle pedestal is visible from the top of the pedestal on the infusion tubing.
  2. Use tape to mark one of the tubes so that you can distinguish them.
  3. Fill a syringe with saline and carefully insert a needle into the ends of the infusion tubing
  4. Use this to flush the tubing with saline, making sure that there is good and straight flow from each of the tubes.
  5. Place the tubes onto the infusion pump needles snuggly and evenly. About 1-2 cm onto the pumps should be plenty (2cm is the most).
  6. Use the infusion pump to manually draw until you see an air pocket at the bottom of the tubing.
    1. At this point, you can check that the air bubble is evenly pulled up and roughly estimate if there is equal flow between the two tubes.
