Pre-surgery preparations

  1. Each mouse should have a Surgery Log sheet (*.pdf at top of this page) with completed information.
  2. Place cannulae, screws, dummy cannulae into 32% novalsan to disinfect.
  3. Weigh the mouse.
  4. Use the weight to calculate volume of atropine injection, and administer.
  5. Place mouse in induction chamber and induce using 4% isoflurane.

Surgery

  1. Ensure that mouse is deep down in the induction chamber by doing a quick foot pinch. If the mouse does not flinch, it is deep enough to transfer.
  2. Change the anesthesia flow to the nose cone, and place the mouse into the nose cone for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  3. Quickly, secure the ear bars and place mouse into the stereotaxic, replacing the mouse into the nose cone as needed to keep under anesthesia.
  4. Apply ocular ointment to the mouse's eyes (to prevent drying). Very important for post-op!
  5. Rub head with 32% Novalsan from anterior to posterior.
  6. Rub head with lidocaine from anterior to posterior.
  7. Make an incision AP. You want to see the bone over OB, and just above the cerebellum. It does not need to be a large incision.
  8. Pull back skin and put slaws on (be careful to avoid slaws covering eyes)
